#3 GENDER STEREOTYPES - Gender roles in tv shows
With so many tv shows and movies clearly depicting gender roles between men and women, one popular show in particular has a better representation of females. According to Huffington Post, the tv show The Office has 5 consistent female leads which is unusual for most shows. Often times the males outnumber the female characters. In The Office, there is an independent, working woman in each department of Dunder Mifflin, the paper company. The show still shows female stereotypes by making some female characters more emotional, but also shows female strength through others. In comparison, The Big Bang Theory shows the female lead, Penny, to be ditzy, attractive, and sexually motivated. The differences between the portrayal of women in each show is a perfect example of how media can accurately represent women or feed into the stereotype.
